He must have slept. The next thing he knew, he was awake and listening to stealthy feet moving in the darkness. His hand shot to the gun. The intruder was quicker, surer. He heard the weapon clank onto the stand beside the bed.
"It's all right," Kasimanda whispered.
Some of the tension went out of him. In the semi-darkness, he could see her only in outline. When he remembered she could see him a lot better, his stomach knotted. "What're you doing here?" he growled, trying to pull the bedding over the stump of his right leg.
Her hand covered his. "Lie still."
He felt the mattress shift as she came down beside him. "I'm going to take care of the wound."
"No." He tried to slide away, but one of her hands gripped his shoulder, stilling him. When the other hand touched his ruined flesh, he went rigid. "Don't."
"It's all right," she answered, a quaver in her voice. "I understand."
He uttered a short, humorless laugh. "Yeah? And how in Atherdan's name could you understand? What have you lost?" The instant the words left his mouth, he regretted them. Consumed by pain and humiliation, he'd forgotten what she'd told him only a short time ago--that, indeed, she'd lost everything.
She didn't reply, only stared at him. He couldn't hold her gaze, had to look away.
For several more moments, silence hung in the darkness between them. Then her fingers flattened against his hot skin.
"Let me see if this salve works," she whispered. "I want it to work. I want to give you that. Maybe it's all I can give you."

I loved this book ,its a book I recommend people to read. Even though it was short it is still worth reading
its defineately futuristic and a romance has some action and some road bumps but still a great read and one to be read no matter what your likes or dislikes this book is inspiring , and one that shows of a long lost relationship to be rekindled in the unlikely places in a futuristic world
This book was a delight to read. The first Syfy plot and the first time the couple didn't have the usual instant attraction to each other made this a refreshing and engrossing story I couldn't put down. I hope to read more like this in the future.
He is recovering from a grievous wound that destroyed his lower leg... and he has bought a property that reminds him of a happier time.... Starting a new career in farming .. as far from his life as a soldier as he can get...
She is hiding from soldiers like him....
Perfect read for a trip into work....
Enjoyable trip to another planet .... but the hero is recovering from a war that was not his choosing...
and although he is from the winning side, he feels as though he has lost too much..
HERO'S WELCOME is an enjoyable science fiction romance from Rebecca York. While short, Ms. York creates a world that is detailed and realistic for the reader. The hero is a wounded warrior, the heroine his childhood sweetheart whose family was on the losing side of the war. After being abused after the war, she tracks him down. Together, they learn to accept their differences and overcome their fears. While a quick read, this story is well worth the time.
I've read an enjoyed all of Ms. York's Decorah Security books so I decided to give some of her other books a try. I have to say that i'm glad that I did. It was an enjoyable read for a chilly, lazy afternoon. I plan to eventually read all of her books, and I know I won't be disappointed. With all of the new authors out there, it was really refreshing to read an ebook that I didn't have to keep editing with my brain while trying to figure out what the author was trying to say.
For a short story, this sci-fi romance packed in a good plot, characters I enjoyed from the start and a little bit of creative world building about two human races trying to control the same planet.
Link, an embittered permanently injured ex-soldier, was from the lower class Dorre race that overthrew the upper class race and now he has arrived to claim his war prize- a large Farlian estate. But then he finds one of the hated Farlians in residence and this one was the one to reject him as a lover when they were younger because he was not good enough. He learns that he was not the only one changed by war when he hears Kasiminda's story and their time together becomes a time of healing.
This was a good short story Sci-Fi Romance that I can recommend to those who enjoy the genre.
